Calm Seas at Cape Adare
We were fortunate to recieve a fine calm day as Heritage Adventurer arrived at Cape Adare, especially when the site is renowned for its gale force winds.
Even though the majority of the Adélie penguins had left the colony for the winter our senses were assaulted by smell of guano when first landing on the beach.
Being told about the history of the site and the planned conservation work by our guides gave us a good understanding of the challenges that Cape Adare presented for explorers in the past, and what awaits for those in the future.
Our first impression on entering Borchgrevink's historic Hut was its size-- the building seemed too small to house 10 men.
It must have been so claustrophobic for men of different cultures, intellects and backgrounds to be forced to live in a confined space about the size of our cabins.
In summary our first landing on the Antarctic Continent exceeded all expectations.
