Bluebird Day at The Snares

Zodiac cruise The Snares_K.Riedel

The Snares Islands turned on a bluebird day for expeditioners on our Auckland Islands and The Snares voyage.

Piling into the Zodiacs we cruised these formidable, ancient fractured granite outcrops on calm blue water under a clear blue sky.

Snares Crested Penguins put on an impressive display as they navigated the treacherous 'penguin slide' while Snares Fernbird and Tomtit could be seen flitting amongst the large tree daisy forests and New Zealand Fur Seals lazed on the jagged rocks.

On the water large numbers of Sooty Shearwaters rafted while New Zealand/Hooker's Sea Lions patrolled the coastline and Buller's Albatross were observed above.

After exploring the sea caves we returned to Spirit of Enderby, with a new found appreciation of this priceless ecosystem, in time for breakfast.

We are now steaming towards Port Ross, in the Auckland Islands, with an ETA of 2230 hours.
