Back-to-Back Macquarie Island Tracks
Macquarie Island continues to deliver on our second day exploring Australia's Subantarctic wonderland!
It was back-to-back adventure on our 'Galapagos of the Southern Ocean' voyage, starting with great views of the huge Royal Penguin colony at the southern end of the island during an early morning cruise.
Hours were also spent enjoying wildlife encounters with Elephant Seals, King and Royal Penguins at Sandy Bay before Macca's weather gave us the signature Subantarctic experience - wind and drizzle. Later in the afternoon we explored The Isthmus, location of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) station, first set up in 1947.
We broke into groups and enjoyed great views from the Razorback lookout and also observed a Gentoo Penguin colony on the western side of The Isthmus. With our hearts (and memory cards) filled with Macquarie's incredible flora and fauna it was time to return to Heritage Adventurer.
We hoisted anchor early evening and headed north for Campbell Island as we waved goodbye from an incredible two-day adventure.
