Away with the birds in the art-deco inspired city of Napier

Arriving in the architecturally inspired city of Napier, our plans for the day included a visit to the Gannet Colony, free time to explore Napier and an Art Deco Tour of the city.

The weather was perfect for visiting the Gannet Colony at Cape Kidnappers. On the bus we went, and what a stunning drive up to the cliffs it was! With the sun out and blue sky, the view at the first lookout was incredible and promised only good things at the colony. And we were right! What a spectacular stop. To see these beautiful birds fly in, land on their ‘airstrip’, bring in weeds for the nest, and do the iconic breeding dances, was an experience like no other.

In the afternoon, we returned to Napier and enjoyed the museum before our Art Deco Tour. It started with a 15-minute movie on the history of the region, and the devastating 1931 earthquake, followed by a guided walk with an interpretation of the buildings.

The weather was perfect for our walk, and our guide gave us history, mixed with stories and fun facts. This was a highlight of the day, as it gave that extra touch and understanding of Napier and New Zealand.
