Adventures with Albatross on Campbell Island
Today we had the pleasure of enjoying a full day on Campbell Island, this endearing wildlife haven is always a favourite among guests and our expedition team alike.
In the 1990's Campbell Island was cleared of sheep and cattle and the vegetation's recovery has been spectacular. Dracophyllum scrub has returned to the lower portions of the island and the lush vegetation and brilliant colours of the megaherbs are on display across the upper portions.
For our more enthusiastic guests, a seven hour walk took us on a loop across the island to the rugged cliffs and islands of the western coast and back to the calm of Perseverance Harbour. We had to keep an eye out for Hooker's/New Zealand Sea Lions who have the tendency to wander into the interior of the island and make it very clear whose island it is!
The island is also dotted with nesting Sothern Royal Albatross which can be observed sitting on their nests, wheeling in the sky above or gamming in small gatherings. It's not until you are among them, with them flying overhead and blocking out the sun, that you get an appreciation of their size.
After our eventual day it was back to our trusty expedition vessel Spirit of Enderby, for a recap in the bar before another excellent dinner from our fantastic chefs.
