A wildlife haven at the famous Sandy Bay

This morning provided another opportunity for us to explore the abundant wildlife at Sandy Bay on Macquarie Island, observing the King and Royal Penguins, Elephant Seals as well as Skuas and Giant Petrels.

We were greeted with good conditions and enjoyed exploring the beach and heading up the boardwalk to the Royal Penguin breeding colony. Our expert Zodiac drivers navigated strong winds on the journey to and from Heritage Adventurer, with everyone getting the chance to spend more time at this wonderful location after a great visit the day before.

After lunch back on board our trusty expedition vessel, we relocated near Buckles Bay at the north end of the Island. We went ashore and divided into smaller groups with a guide to explore the area around the Isthmus, where the Australian Base ANARE is located. It was then up to the lookout on Razorback Hill where we were rewarded with great views of the north end of the Island. We also had the chance to walk the beach on the western side of the Isthmus (after negotiating piles of Elephant Seals along the way). On the western beach we observed Gentoo Penguins, our sixth penguin species of the expedition.

Everyone was back on board by 1800 and we began the journey north to Campbell Island, allowing us to reflect on an incredible two days at this amazing Subantarctic Island. It was a privilege to spend time in such a remote location and see wildlife thriving.
