A thermal wonderland in Rotorua, soaking in local culture

The first day of our New Zealand Coastal Odyssey started after breakfast in Rotorua, before taking the bus to Bay of Plenty to meet Heritage Adventurer. In Rotorua, we visited the thermal area of Te Puia and enjoyed a delicious buffet of traditional Māori dishes, that had been prepared in the steam ovens of Whakarewarewa. From our tables we watched the incredible sights of the Pōhutu Geyser erupting across the valley. We then met our guide for a tour of the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute and thermal area. Watching in awe we witnessed first-hand the work of experts in the training of new wood, stone and bone carvers and weavers. Their skill and patience were truly remarkable.

The steam and sulphur smell made it clear that the forces of Earth were very close to the surface. It was no wonder that indigenous people chose to harness this power and give this place special cultural significance.

After departing Te Puiawe had a short transfer through the prime agricultural land of the Bay of Plenty to the Port of Tauranga to meet Heritage Adventurer
