Subantarctic Splendour at The Snares
Our second Galapagos of the Southern Ocean voyage for the season was off to a fantastic start with an incredible Zodiac cruise of the Subantarctic Snares Islands. Our explorations started along the eastern coastline of North East Island with Ho Ho Bay providing some excellent views of Snares Crested Penguins (the star of the show today) as well as New Zealand Fur Seals and Hooker's/New Zealand Sea Lions. Closer inspection of the Olearia/Tree Daisy forest allowed for sightings of The Snares Fernbird and Tomtit, while the 'Penguin Slide' was full of action with Snares Crested Penguins moving up and down the steep rock in a constant stream as well as rafts of penguins on the water. Out in more open water, huge numbers of seabirds were encountered and, when hearts and memory cards were full we returned to our trusty expedition ship Heritage Adventurer for a well-earned lunch as we farewelled The Snares cruising past the Western Chain bound for the Auckland Islands.
