Spotting one of the world's rarest penguins – A day exploring Enderby Island
Our Galapagos of the Southern Ocean adventure continued as we arrived at the Auckland Islands on a beautiful sunny day. Guests joining the 7-hour hike around Enderby Island departed at 0800. Others decided to picnic on the Northern Cliffs and watch Light-mantled Sooty Albatross/Toroa pango flying in formation and sitting atop their mounded nests like avian royalty.
Everyone had incredible Southern Royal Albatross experiences, watching them soar in the strong southwestern winds through passing sun and showers. Some lucky adventurers also enjoyed observing the flightless Auckland Island Teal/Tētē kākāriki and the majestic Yellow-eyed Penguin/Hoiho, one of the world's rarest penguins.
The magic of the open spaces and twisted Rātā forest captivated everyone, and the bright sun shone on the white sandy beach which had New Zealand/Hooker's Sea Lions lying about the colony.
Those on the Zodiac cruise observed from the sea all the Port Ross historic sites (Hardwicke, Transit of Venus station, Ranui Coastwatch Station and the DOC huts at Deas Cove)
It was a magical day that will live with us for a long time!
