Powering Against the Ripping Tides of Horizontal Falls
The early morning light captivated as it danced across the water and over the undulating rocky cliff formations as Heritage Adventurer anchored south-east of Slug Island (named after the Beche'-de-mer Sea Cucumber found in the area) in Talbot Bay.
Understanding the area's geology, thanks to our incredible on board guides, and how these amazing waves of rock were formed by earth movements hundreds of millions of years ago made the moment even more special. It is unfathomable to think that, in places such as Horizontal Falls, the nearly vertical walls, steep mountains and deep valleys were once flat. The fascinating landforms created spectacular images and our Zodiac drivers provided plenty of adrenalin as they powered our inflatables against the ripping tide surrounded by whirlpools and churning water. All agreed it was an incredible privilege to experience the sheer power of the Kimberley's massive tidal movements and world's only Horizontal Falls famously described by Sir David Attenborough as "one of the greatest wonders of the natural world".
As we explored nearby Cyclone Creek, the twisted mangroves provided a haven for a myriad of birdlife and the smile of a crocodile topped off our visit. Back on board we made our way to the Bridge, Observation Lounge and Observation Deck so as to not miss our scenic navigation through 'the narrows', as our trusty expedition vessel made her way to our next adventure.
