A Perfect Day to Start the New Year
Sitting on the pier at the abandoned weather station in Perseverance Harbour, Campbell Island, we can hear the rhythmic ‘chit chit chit' of a Campbell Island Snipe in the Dracophyllum scrub; the periodic chuffing of a resident sea lion coming up for air between bouts of foraging for blue cod; the chitter of terns and snatches of radio chat in Russian from Spirit of Enderby.
The sun's shining warmly through morning cloud, lighting up the harbour and the tussock slopes of Mt Lyall where Southern Royal Albatross, over 3 metres from wing-tip to wing-tip, soar along its ridges.
It's the first day of 2020, the last landing of our Galapagos of the Southern Ocean voyage and we're feeling incredibly grateful to be here.
