Island paradise in the Philippines
We could almost step off the gangway onto the beach as our Captain impressively manoeuvred us close to the island for this morning’s adventure, Balicasag. After a short Zodiac cruise, it was off to explore this serene little island soaking in the sights of the renowned diving destination.
After building up a sweat, it was time to get under the water and check out the Balicasag Marine Sanctuary. A steep vertical wall that rose to 3m and quickly disappeared to 100m proved a popular site for many Green Turtles who casually lazed about in the deep blue waters. It was a fabulous experience exploring the many underwater attractions of this beautiful remote island.
After lunch on board Heritage Adventurer, we arrived at our second island for the day at the busy port of Baclayon, Bohol Island. The local crowd were excited to see us, giving a friendly welcome as we arrived. We boarded our buses and were entertained by our passionate guides who shared fascinating cultural insights about life in the Philippines. We arrived at the sanctuary and couldn’t believe our luck, a Tarsier straight away!
It was then onto the Chocolate Hills, and they proved to be postcard-perfect. The little rain that showed up was a refreshing cool down after the 222 stairs to the top. At the summit, we were met with expansive views as the clouds departed to show us the famous chocolate scenery that stretched into the horizon. It was another short bus ride to Rajah Sikatuna National Park where birders searched for their creatures of flight, and we all enjoyed a rewarding trek into this pristine piece of forest where monkeys, lemurs, birds, and endemic trees were all enjoyed.
To finish the day, we boarded the Zodiacs that waited upriver at the resort for us. As the last light faded, bats and fireflies took over the skies and it was an emotive journey home through the perfect dark of the evening.
