Fantastic Fiordland – A day in Dusky Sound
Following a wake-up call from our Expedition Leader Steve, the grey skies turned to blue-bird day perfection.
Following a short Zodiac cruise, we explored Indian Island with our Expedition Team who gave us an overview of the history of this island, where Captain Cook had his first encounter with local Māori. Shortly after, we Zodiac cruised along the island observing New Zealand Fur Seals, Oystercatchers, Gulls and heard many other birds in the background. Next up we landed at Astronomer’s Point, where New Zealand became the most accurately located place on the globe in 1773. It was then back to Heritage Adventurer for lunch and to relocate for our afternoon adventure.
This afternoon we were spoiled for choice! An optional helicopter flight, a three-hour hike on Anchor Island or a Zodiac cruise around the Many Islands. On the hike, we landed with the sounds of a Kākā while New Zealand Fur Seals were swimming around. Making our way up to a great viewpoint over Fiordland was a definite highlight of the day. The Zodiac cruise showed us many little islands, wildlife and history, while our expert guide explained what we saw. The helicopter flight over Dusky Sound, including a landing on top of Mount Pender, was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Back on board Heritage Adventurer, it was time to dress up as the Captain and his staff introduced themselves and we enjoyed the Captain’s Welcome Dinner.
