Experiencing the sub-Antarctic on Campbell Island
In the early morning light, we made the left turn from the open sea into the sheltered waters of Perseverance Harbour. Approaching Campbell Island, we encountered our first true sub-Antarctic day with wind and rain making themselves present.
After arriving on the island, we were offered three choices - the trek to Northwest Bay, the all-day walk on Mount Honey, or the morning Zodiac cruise and afternoon ascent of the boardwalk to Col Lyall Saddle. It was certainly a hard choice, with plenty of discussion before decisions were made and our three groups departed.
It was a truly immersive adventure, as we all experienced the sub-Antarctic climate that makes Campbell Island the wild place it is. The afternoon had many brighter patches, but the next shower was never too far away.
Reconvening back aboard Heritage Adventurer for refreshments before dinner, we all excitedly shared our comparisons for the day.
Ours was the best, said the long walkers - we saw everything; but no said the Mount Honey group - some of us made the summit and had Megaherbs and Albatross everywhere; you're both wrong, said the board walkers - we had time with a nesting pair of Albatross and set personal records for "the windiest place I have ever been".
All groups observed Southern Royal Albatross, Campbell Island Snipe, Campbell Island Teal, and New Zealand Sea Lions while braving the elements and enjoying spectacular views of Campbell Island. We were tired but feeling triumphant after our day's adventure.
After dinner and this lively discussion, it was time for bed as our trusty expedition vessel sailed downwind with rainbows shining off the port beam.
