Amongst the ice near Coulman Island
Today was all about ice, as we continued to explore Antarctica on our In the Wake of Scott and Shackleton expedition. Early morning, in beautiful low sunlight, Heritage Adventurer pushed slowly into a spectacular landscape of pack ice dotted with tabular icebergs, against the impressive backdrop of ice-clad Coulman Island. We enjoyed close-up views of small groups of Emperor Penguins on the ice, as well as Crabeater and Weddell Seals, while a pair of pure white Snow Petrels wheeled around us and then settled on a small iceberg.
This afternoon, we took a magical Zodiac cruise through thin pancake ice, sparkling in the sunshine. Dotted amongst it were much larger chunks of old sea ice and on one of them rested a magnificent Leopard Seal with beautifully mottled fur. It was a fantastic sighting!
Then it was back onboard for a fabulous Valentine’s Day-themed dinner. What a special end to another very special day.
