Young Enderby Trust Recipients Embark on Adventure of a Lifetime

Enderby Trust works in conjunction with New Zealand’s premier expedition travel company Heritage Expeditions. The Trust offers scholarship positions aboard expeditions to the Subantarctic Islands and Antarctica so that young people aged 18-30 years can visit this region in the same spirit of exploration and discovery as the maritime vessels of the early 1800s.

Four successful scholarship recipients have been travelling on the ‘Birding Down Under’ expedition this month, aboard the Spirit of Enderby. We have enjoyed showing Jacqueline, Nancy, Giselle and Natalie why we are passionate about this region and sharing our knowledge and expertise of the remote Subantarctic Islands with them. The scholarships on this expedition are worth up to US$8,150 each.

Birding Down Under is arguably one of the greatest birding expeditions anywhere in the world and gives participants a unique opportunity to view numerous birds, in some cases including rare pelagic species and also endemic island species. It is the only expedition cruise that visits all of the Subantarctic Islands and the Chatham Islands in one voyage.

The number of Enderby Trust applications received each year continually grows, these highly sought after opportunities allow scholarship recipients to experience this remote region. Voyages and scholarship availability varies from season to season. The Trustees hope participants will share their experiences and enthusiasm with other people and grow the awareness of the Southern Ocean. All expeditions are accompanied by a team of naturalists and biologists to enhance the learning possibilities. Many past recipients have continued on to pursue successful careers protecting and advocating for conservation in this region, and some have returned to the ship with increased experience to lecture for Heritage Expeditions on their field of expertise.

This Birding Down Under expedition marked the start of the 2016/17 southern season voyages, we will soon also welcome Enderby Trust Scholarship recipients on the ‘Forgotten Islands of the South Pacific’ and Antarctic voyages.

To enquire and register your interest in future scholarships please contact us and put Enderby Trust in the subject line.
