CONSERVATION CHALLENGES FOR ARCTIC WADERS
ON THE EAST ASIAN AUSTRALASIAN FLYWAY 

Heritage Expeditions is proud to bring researchers Dr. Evgeny Syroechkovskiy and Elena Lappo all the way from the Russian Far East to Christchurch for a very special evening. Join Evgeny and Elena from Birds Russia as they discuss the conservation challenges for Arctic waders on the East Asian Australasian Flyway with special reference to the Spoon-billed Sandpiper. Both Elena and Evgeny have dedicated years of research on the challenges to the Flyway and will provide fascinating insights from their experience. 

Previous Heritage Expeditions passengers may recognise Evgeny and Elena from their time on board the Spirit of Enderby in Russia. Evgeny and Elena have extensive experience with the critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper. The Spoon-billed Sandpiper is one of the most threatened birds on earth with less than 100 pairs left in the wild. Breeding in the Far East of Russia, the Spoon-billed Sandpiper migrates south to winter in South East Asia, 8 000 kms from its breeding grounds.

DR. EVGENY SYROECHKOVSKIY – Lecturer/Guide

Dr. Evgeny Syroechkovskiy was born in a family of biologists and after studying Biogeography at Moscow State University has dedicated his life to bird conservation in the Russian Arctic and on the flyways around the world with special attention to the most threatened East Asian Flyway.

He is currently supervising Arctic conservation research at All-Russian Institute for Nature Conservation in Moscow. Being one of the leading Russian Arctic ornithologists he spent 25 summers in the north with the last half of them in the Russian Far East. He is Chair of the Goose, Swan and Duck Study Group of Northern Eurasia and initiated conservation programs on Spoon-billed Sandpiper in Russia and is currently Chairing International Task Force on the species.

Evgeny is coordinating SBS conservation and monitoring work of BirdsRussia, which have been operating in Chukotka and Kamchatka since the year 2000 and for last three summers in cooperation with Heritage Expeditions and BirdLife International.
