True Wilderness Tasmania itinerary:
Day 1: Depart Hobart
You are welcome on board the ship starting at 10 a.m. After being shown your cabin, free to explore the vessel. We depart at 11:30 a.m. sharp, sailing down the picturesque D’Entrecasteaux Channel and making our first landing of the expedition in the late afternoon on the Labillardiere Peninsula on Bruny Island.
Days 2 and 3: Southwest National Park
There are few places left in the world that are as isolated and untouched as Tasmania’s Southwest Wilderness. On the morning of our second day we will arrive at Port Davy and Bathurst Harbour in the Southwest National Park, home to some of the world’s last tracts of virgin temperate rainforest, which contribute much to the grandeur and extraordinary diversity of this ancient area. We spend two full days in and around the Park, making numerous landings, enabling us to fully appreciate and enjoy the area.
Day 4: Port Arthur
An overnight sail will bring us to Port Arthur. Between 1830 and1877 about 12,500 convicts served sentences at Port Arthur, and for some it was a living hell. Enjoy a guided tour of the historic site and museum and explore the harbor by Zodiac.
Day 5: Maria Island National Park & Forest Bay Marine Reserve
A short overnight sail takes us next to Maria Island National Park, home to some of the most rewarding bird watching in Tasmania. It is the only national park where you can see 11 of the state’s native bird species, including the endangered Forty-spotted Pardalote. Enjoy a shorter or more strenuous longer walk. If you are keen on a snorkel or dive (wet suits are essential), the Forest Bay Marine Reserve provides a great opportunity.
Day 6: Freycinet National Park
The Freycinet Peninsula and Schouten Island make up the Freycinet National Park, which is noted for its magnificent scenery, coastal heaths, orchids and other wildflowers. We plan a full day in this Park, starting with an early morning landing on Schouten Island. If weather conditions permit we will land at Wine Glass Bay, arguably one of the most attractive beaches in Tasmania, otherwise we will land at Coles Bay, also lovely. Enjoy walks or simply relax at whichever landing we make.
Day 7: Hobart
We cruise back to Hobart overnight, berthing after breakfast. Then it will be time for farewells. We strongly suggest that you might like to spend some extra time in Tasmania on our Special Post Cruise Tour.
Our vessel, the 'Spirit of Enderby' is perfect for Expedition Travel. The real focus and emphasis of every expedition is getting you ashore as often as possible for as long as possible with maximum safety and comfort.
It carries just 48 passengers in very comfortable accommodation (refurbished in New Zealand Nov '04). The cuisine is excellent and is prepared by top NZ and Australian chefs.
Our Expeditions are accompanied by some of the most experienced naturalists and guides, who have devoted a lifetime to field research in the areas that we visit. The ship is crewed by a very enthusiastic and most experienced Russian Capitan and crew.
The 'Spirit of Enderby' measures 72 metres in length and is fully ice-strengthened. Powered by two 1,560 horse power diesel engines. It is capable of speeds of up to 12 knots. What makes this Expedition Vessel absolutely unique is the equipment we carry including:
a) our fleet of RIB’s, (rigid inflatable boats) sometimes referred to as zodiacs. These extremely safe and stable craft will land you at some of the most amazing places.
b) Our specially designed and built Hovercraft (2) give us unprecedented over ice capability in Antarctica allowing us to land in places that are inaccessible to other ships.
The name 'Spirit of Enderby' honours the work and the vision of the Enderby Brothers of London. The Enderby Captains were at the forefront of Antarctic exploration for almost 40 years in the early 1800’s. It also celebrates Enderby Island, arguably the greatest Subantarctic Island in the world.
