The current voyage is drawing to a close with some memorable hightlights. Yesterday in what was a bit of a logistical challenge, we managed to get all expedition participants views of Spoon-billed Sandpipers. At the village of Meinypil’gyno, the Spoon-billed Sandpiper Recovery team carefully guided us to nests they were observing. For those keen birders amongst us it was a mega tick.
After departing Meinypil’gyno in the afternoon we had the most amazing experience with a large number of Walrus. There were over 3,000 animals hauled out on a beach and as we very quietly approached them in the Zodiacs, some came out to greet us. We spent nearly two hours in their company and during this time they gained in confidence, approaching closer and closer. The grand finale came when a Grey Whale breached only metres away from us as we cruised back to the Spirit of Enderby.
