Sea Temperatures on the Rise

Our short run up the Bougainville Trench has led to an alarming discovery.

We recorded the sea surface temperature at 33 degrees Centigrade. Five metres down at the engine water intake for the Spirit of Enderby the temperature is still 30 degrees C! This means that the fish are all searching for cooler waters down deep so there is a noticeable lack of birds and cetaceans in an area which is usually productive at its normal sea temperature of 26-27 degrees C.
