Magnificent Mussau
The Spirit of Enderby gently edged her way through the unchartered waters that surround Mussau Island, a remote outpost of Papua New Guinea. This is the most northerly point on our expedition, just under 2 degrees south of the equator. Zodiacs launched, we headed ashore to spend the morning exploring the island’s forest. Once ashore everyone made their way to a series of beautiful cascades that tumble down the hills behind the mission station. The series of beautiful falls and deep pools of water proved very inviting on what was a warm morning, so many took the opportunity for a refreshing dip. The birders spotted a number of island endemic species and sub-species including the Mussau Monarch, Island Leaf Warbler and Russett Tailed Thrush.
After lunch the lure of the sea tempted many to go snorkelling off Little Mussau Island. The beautiful white sand beach with abundant coral just offshore provided the classic tropical paradise. While in the water we enjoyed views of Reef Sharks, Green Turtles and a glorious array of Giant Clams.
