Chuuk Recovering

Our arrival at the Micronesian island of Chuuk was bitter-sweet. The islands in this group recently endured a tropical typhoon and there was much evidence of the damage inflicted on roofs and vegetation. The locals are doing a sterling job of getting back on their feet but the destruction will take some time to repair. Fortunately the bird population has come through relatively unscathed, with all of the endemic species of this special island being sighted during our adventures ashore.

This evening we bade farewell to Chuuk during a heavy tropical downpour and began our 1,500 nautical mile voyage to the southern islands of Japan.
